Re: On the Bench
Love that pipe, Lawrence. Skip is pretty cool too. I assume its the same guy who posted a very favorable comment on my canadian over at pipemakersforum.
Hey Tim, you gotta link?
I would love to read it.
Probably is.
Skip's a great guy.
Edit: Never mind... I found it. Sounds like Skip. He is honest to a fault, and he knows his pipes. He ran a very discerning eye over Whiteringedvolcano, and was suitably impressed. So, I'm not surprised that he commented on your Canadian.
His pipes are a bit on the eccentric side, and he gets a premium for them... I think that is due to his longevity in the business. The Briary is known all over the world.

Re: On the Bench
Hey Tim,
I went to Skip's today, and asked him about his post.
He said he doesn't usually post comments about pipes, but the guys that had posted about your pipe ahead of him really pissed him off.
He said that the guys posting were all rank amateurs, and didn't know shit.
He was really getting hot under the collar when he was telling me about it. Just thinking about it made him mad. He said that he thought you did an excellent job on it.
He also said the comments about the Dunhills was meant to demonstrate that even a "storied" pipe making tradition like Dunhill's couldn't live up to those shit head's standards. And, coupled with the fact that he could never find a Dunhill Billiard or Canadian that was exactly to specs, shows that their criticisms were not only way off base but totally out of line.
Just thought you would like to know.
Skip said to tell everyone that he said Hi!

Re: On the Bench
Thanks, Lawrence. I did not have a problem with any comments. I learn something new every day and was pleased to get some attention and learn some things. I did appreciate Skip's post, though. I agree with him that it is all about interpretation, and not exactly about copying a classic. But you do need to know the details of the classic before going in a different direction, and that is all I took from that ....
Re: On the Bench
I will Phil.
You should have seen Skip. He was hot. He likes your work and really was upset by what he had read.
You should'a seen it.

Re: On the Bench
Well, I started out with a zulu in mind, but I lost the dublin shape a bit when I had to sand through a sand pit. Now it looks more like a cutty. A little more shaping on the stem and shank and this one should be good to go ...

Looks like a dandy, Tim.
Curious what sort of shaping you have in mind...doesn't seem there's much room for improvement.

That's the beauty of crappy iphone photos. You can't see that the stem is still quite rough and full of bumpy parts or that there is a slight bulge in the shank that needs sanding down to make it straighter.

It will all sand out in the long run...

Re: On the Bench
How about a 1/8 bend and call it a woodstock? Not really rounded enough for a cutty, and not really dublin enough for a zulu ... Any thoughts? Looks better straight? You guys are now my official design consultants, unpaid of course, although Phil may sometimes send you some free stuff and you will always be entitled to an exclusive SOB discount ...

Tim, I think a little bend would set it off.
I love it.

I can't picture it with a bend.
It might be great. I just can't see it.
Sweet pipe.

Re: On the Bench
Aside from the sanding and detail work you mentioned, it looks like it could be on to the finishing table.
