Some of the pipes I'll be listing ASAP!

Post  BanjoBob on Tue Jan 10, 2012 11:14 pm

Today it got up to 57.8 degrees so I got the rest of my eBay pipes buffed and ready to list. I emptied out my big rack and put them there for a pic.
There was only room for 36 but that's enough for what I think is an impressive display.

You'd think with so many of the Schulte pipes that I'd be anxious to sell them off, yet almost every one has something about it that makes me want to keep it.
I think I'll start selling them by letting go of the ones I'm NOT fond of.
When buffing them I had 3 that had very flat bits. I suppose they're saddles, but these are completely flat on the top and bottom, it makes me wonder how there was even room for an air hole, and sure enough, the draw is too restricted because of those flat bits. The thickness of the bits are .165", .175" and .185" on those 3 pipes.
On the edges of the bits they have two beveled edges so they are a really attractive bit, but they just have a very poor draw which is a deal breaker for me.
Others that I'm not attracted to are the Apples. Years ago I bought some very pricey Apples and I never enjoyed smoking them. Despite costing over $100 in 1985, and having names like Barling, Comoy or Charatan, they all seemed to get hot and draw moisture, so they were all traded before they got much use.
I've never been fond of Acorns or Pickax shapes either, but these Schulte's look so beautiful that I'm thinking they'd be great for small bowled pipes to smoke the stronger flavored ultra premium tobaccos.
I miss being able to get the Troost slices that seemed to dry up around 1990.
They came looking like a chunk of bacon sliced up and had an aroma that like no other. My local pipe shop used to make up a blend for me that was 50% Troost Cavendish that they called Doug's #2 then the Troost was no longer available due to political reasons (or so they said) and their substitute changed the blend so much that I no longer liked it. Troost could still be had, but it wasn't the good stuff.
Now that I have so danged many pipes, I'm regretting selling my other 36 pipe rack.
I could probably fill them both right now.
I don't know if I ever mentioned it, but ... I like pipes.
