Corn Cob Pipes

Post  NoseWarmer on Tue Nov 08, 2011 4:31 pm

And a button nose and two eyes made out of coal…

OK… there have never been any real serious points of view on cobs here amongst us SOB’s…

I know that we have hashed the subject among topics but how does everyone feel about cobs…

Lawrence… I’ll start with you… You OLD SOB Cob hater… Wink

Hey PhiL,
I'm reformed...
My regular cob, is in my regular rotation. I know I hated the way it made my baccy taste when it was new. Now that it has mellowed over the past twenty years... It's turned into a very decent smoker.
As for the Cob Warden... It gets smoked almost every day. I like to fire it up late in the evening just be for hittin' the rack.

I may need to go buy another just in case.

Glad to hear that you have come to your senses... Wink

I would have to say that I smoke my cobs more than my briars... They just seem to be easier...

The smoke is constant and they take the abuse of smoking where you would not usually smoke a nice briar...

I too love corncobs.
I've had many people ask me how to go about starting pipe smoking and I always tell them to buy a corncob.
The advantages are obvious to me.
They cost very little to buy new.
Last quite a while.
Give a good smoke maybe because they breathe so well,
and if you break it or lose it you don't feel such a terrible loss as you would when you break or lose a fine briar.
My only complaint is the bits.
WHY Nylon???
Also, where can we find a decent cob without spending over $12.95?
Must we go to Washington, Missouri to find a nice one for a good price?
Must we be forced to buy them in quantity from China?
Another thing ... where do all these knobs come from that are trying to hawk those old worn out corn cobs on eBay as though they have a collectable?
I think I have (or had) the only collectable corn cob pipe.
It was one handed out during parades or festivals, the reason I considered it to be collectable was because it was stamped on the bottom, "The American Heart Association". What a hoot. I'll bet they wouldn't be handing them out nowadays.
I don't know if I still have it, but I do remember taking it to work and smoking it and showing the name off while claiming the Heart Assn. ENDORSED Pipe Smoking.

I enjoy the couple of cobs I have. They smoke well, and I like their light weight. But I tend to treat them more like 'beater' pipes, simply for what they are. One of them perpetually lives in my truck for when I'm out and about and feel like a bowl, and the other lives in the pocket of a well-worn jacket I tend to use as a yard-work jacket in the colder months. They don't get much care, and they don't seem to need much.

If I'm around the house, I simply tend to reach for a briar pipe instead. Not because they smoke better or whatever, but because at home I'm more likely to be relaxed where I can enjoy their aesthetics.

Dave (if I can call you that?)

This site was posted at another place a while back... Seems like they have good prices...

http://www.pipetobaccotls.com/about.html

Missouri Meerschaum:
Legend Corn Cob $3.00
Washington Corn Cob $3.75
Country Gentleman $4.50
Diplomat $4.50
Great Dane Egg $5.25
Great Dane Spool $5.25
American General $5.40
American Patriot $5.40
McArthur Natural Straight $5.50
McArthur Polished Bent $7.30
Freehand $17.95

I'm waiting for a PayPal invoice so I can pay for a Freehand and a General Straight...
The Freehand pice is 1/2 the cost of everyone else...

Since I smoke mine a litte more, I have bought a few Walker Briar Works "Forever" stems... It improves the smoke so much...

@ Sparrow... I have afew that stay in the garage... I have to blow the spider webs out of them and I figure the heat will kill everything else... I do meed to stash one in my new beater truck...

PhiL I am right there with you, and also thanks to you Very Happy For me the cobs are easy quick bowls while I am doing stuff. I drive alot and they just seem to be easier to smoke. I smoke alot of flakes and the cobs don't seem to be as picky as the briar pipes when it come to tobacco prep. Just stuff and go!!

Its funny, I always kind of laughed at corn cobs but thanks to PhiL, I found Walker Briar Works and got myself a straight nosewarmer cob and love it. Super light, always smokes dry and great. It is definitely my "work" pipe, from working out in the yard, in the garage, or out on location, I'm glad I bought it. I actually have another cob on the way, just need to get a Forever stem for it.

My cobs are all MM and my go to pipes. I have 8 Country Gents, two Freehands, one Legend, and one Diplomat. I especially enjoy the Country Gents they smoke dry and deliver a great smoke especially if you put good stuff in them. Smile
For the money they cannot be beat and they hold up well. The first 10-12 bowls are
perhaps the worst breaking them in and burning the wood out of the bottom. I make some pipe mud and fill in the spaces in the bottom to help it along down there. Once you get it broke in some its all good. I am a cob smokin SOB and happy to do so. Very Happy

Cut Freehand Stems

Post  NoseWarmer on Fri Nov 18, 2011 10:40 am

I had a few Freehand Stems laying around so I sent them to Dave at Walker Briar Works and asked him to cut the tenons for a standard cob... and this is the results for my "Kick Arounds"
